Overview
Nicotine is an essential component of the public discourse on tobacco and nicotine products, however there is a great deal of public confusion over what nicotine is and its impact on those who use it. The first part of this webinar will provide a scientific explanation of nicotine and how it interacts with the human body, including its specific impact on children. The second part of the webinar will address common misperceptions about nicotine and ways to better educate the public on this issue.

ARUNI BHATNAGAR is a Smith and Lucille Gibson Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville, and he is widely regarded for spearheading the new field of Environmental Cardiology. He has spent more than 25 years studying the impact of toxic substances, tobacco smoke constituents, and environmental pollutants on heart disease. He is a graduate of Kanpur University, India, and received his post-doctoral training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr. Bhatnagar is known for his pioneering work on the metabolism of toxic substances in ambient air and tobacco smoke and how they affect the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He has published over 280 research papers,commentaries, and review articles, as well as 20 book chapters. A leader in cardiovascular health, he has served as a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Acute Coronary Events, as well as the Committee on Long-Term Health Consequences of Exposure to Burn Pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. For the last 7 years, Dr. Bhatnagar has served as Deputy Editor of the American Heart Association journal,Circulation Research. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Defense, and the American Heart Association. He currently serves as Director of the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute and Chief of the Environmental Medicine Division at the University of Louisville and as Director of the American Heart Association Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center.
Joe Murillo currently serves as Chief Regulatory Officer for JUUL Labs, Inc., where he leads global regulatory strategy, engagement, research, and advocacy. In his role, he is responsible for the Company’s efforts to comply with FDA regulation and oversees government affairs, scientific affairs, and corporate responsibility.Before joining JLI, Joe served as Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Altria Client Services, where he led regulatory strategies and FDA submissions for Altria’s harm reduction product portfolio. Throughout the course of his career, Joe has garnered significant experience bringing products to market.Joe began his career as a commercial litigator in New York City and is a graduate of Columbia Law School as well as the University of Miami. Joe currently serves as Vice President of the board of the Richmond Symphony Foundation and is a former Chair of the Richmond Symphony.
