Update Author Guidelines
Update is a bimonthly magazine that welcomes the contribution of articles on food and drug law, regulation, and education, and related areas.
Each issue of Update has a theme for its feature articles. See the Editorial Calendar for issue themes. The submission of nonfeature articles and Letters to the Editor for each issue also is encouraged. Update does not guarantee publication of submitted material. Authors do not receive any type of remuneration from FDLI.
Types of Articles
Feature articles directly relate to the issue's theme. They include viewpoints on industry-specific trends, regulatory concerns, the latest developments in the law, and current events in the food and drug field throughout the United States and the world (1,500-2,500 words).
Nonfeature articles address a wide range of topics and generally are not related to an issue's theme (1,000-2,000 words).
Letters to the Editor address a single topic raised in a previous issue of Update (up to 500 words).
Style
Articles will be edited for length, style, content, grammar, and punctuation. A style guide for Update authors to follow is available. Authors are provided an opportunity to review the edited version of their article before it is published. If an author does not respond with changes to the edited version before the deadline for comments, the version faxed will be published.
Affiliation Statements & Photos
A single attribution line indicating current employment and location is required. Authors who are or have been involved as a principal or in a representative capacity with the subject matter of the article must so designate this in an additional attribution line. Full disclosure is necessary to provide reviewers and readers with useful information to assess the publication.
Authors may submit headshot photos along with their articles. These may be emailed along with the article or original photos may be provided, which will be scanned and returned.
Delivery
The preferred method for receiving articles is by email attachment as Word documents sent to Michael Levin-Epstein, at mdl@fdli.org. Articles may also be submitted on CD, in Microsoft Word format, along with a hard copy of the article to:
